Managing Monkeypox: An Employers Guide for Managing Monkeypox in the Workplace

Monkeypox was declared a public health emergency of international concern by the World Health Organization (“WHO”) on July 23, 2022, and a public health emergency by the United States government on August 4, 2022. As of the date of this publication, there are 18,417 confirmed reported cases in the US and an average of 337 news cases per day. Despite these designations and the increase in confirmed cases, little is known about Monkeypox and there is a significant lack of guidance for employers to rely upon. Pizza & Punishments: An Employer’s Quick Guide On When To Provide Religious Accommodations

Most of the time, the need for providing a religious accommodation is obvious. An employee will submit a religious exemption request, and the employer will engage in the interactive process with the employee to determine what accommodation will appropriately address the employee's religious needs. However, there are times where the need for a religious accommodation is obvious and reoccurring, placing the employer on notice of the need for the accommodation. A similar, albeit extreme, example of this occurred recently at a Canton high school.
