US House of Representatives Passes Coronavirus Response Bill

The US House of Representatives passed the Families First Coronavirus Response Act on a bi-partisan basis on Saturday, March 14th. While the Act has not yet been passed by the Senate and signed by the President, the major portions of the Act are likely to become law in the coming days. The two most important provisions of the Act are the creation of paid sick days, changes to the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), and the creation of a paid leave benefit. A summary of these provisions is below; however, it is important to note that these are subject to change by the US Senate. It is also important to note that all provisions of the Act expire on December 31, 2020. Fishel Downey Albrecht & Riepenhoff LLP Announces Managing Partner

Fishel Downey Albrecht & Riepenhoff LLP (FDAR) announced that Partner Melanie Williamson has been appointed by the firm’s management team to the position of Managing Partner. Williamson succeeds Daniel Downey, who has guided the firm in that role since 2018. “Melanie is an excellent litigator and a natural leader. I’m confident her efforts in this new role will further the firm’s growth and reputation in litigation,” Downey said. Williamson is the firm’s first female managing partner. She joined FDAR in 2014, focusing on civil litigation and law enforcement clients. Williamson was named partner in 2018. Prior to joining the firm, she worked for The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Managing Employees in an Election Year Marc A. Fishel and Meghan Brickner  As another election season approaches, employers should be informed as to how to manage employee politics in the workplace. Studies have shown that political talk is more common in the workplace then it was in the past and has the potential to impact employee productivity. According to the Society for Human Resources Management, in 2016, 1 in 4 employees reported negative workplace conversations about politics.[1] Workers were more likely to avoid co-workers due to these negative political conversations.  Obviously, these experiences are not conducive to a productive workplace.
